The SkillMobil concept involves a three-day workshop that teaches high school students about the origins of consumer products and also provides an opportunity to create/repair. The idea involves visits by the SkillMobil caravan to Brisbane high schools. Booklets will guide and inform the process. The course also incorporates a buddy system that aims to teach leadership and collaboration skills.
Not all Queensland high schools currently offer Home Economics—which takes a ‘hands-on’ approach to subjects such as food, nutrition, textiles, and sustainability practices—and from 2019 it is to be discontinued from the senior high school curriculum. This leaves an ever-increasing gap in the knowledge for young people for creating/repairing/sustainability. Our concept aims to help fill this gap. We presented our idea to students at a local high school and received positive feedback about the idea from both the students and the teacher. |
