2016 Brief To visually represent the path taken by a chosen material, from creation to application, using a map layout. Elements such as critical impacts, ontological viewpoints and the role of the designer were to be included. |
I wanted to represent the pervasive narrative in our material culture: materials are discovered or created, but not necessarily fully researched. As a consequence detrimental ecological and environmental impacts can be overlooked (including how materials interact with other materials).
The more I delved into graphene, the more I realised its story reminded me of the story of asbestos. The original print was overlaid with a transparent sheet for the reader to draw parallels between the two materials.
